“If you have a disability, it’s really hard to find your place in this world,” says collegiate para track and field athlete Maria Velat. After becoming paralyzed in high school, Maria found her way back to sports, and now competes through the Adaptive Student Athlete Program (ASAP), a national program co-founded by Guardian and University of Michigan Adaptive Sports and Fitness to expand access to competitive opportunities for para athletes. Maria’s goal is to work toward a day when adaptive sports are seen as equal.
